Germany working on rare earth partnership with Kazakhstan
Germany is working on an exclusive raw materials partnership with Kazakhstan, according to government and business sources.
The Federation of German Industries (BDI) said it had received positive responses from about a dozen companies. They are looking to cooperate in digging projects, a spokesman for the group said.
The German government is involved in an initiative to improve access, sources said, and a secretary from the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, Bernd Pfaffenbach, has been assigned to help generate political support. Chancellor Angela Merkel has been a vocal supporter of raw materials development in Kazakhstan.
Bordering both China and Russia, Kazakhstan, mainly a gas exporter currently, has large deposits of rare earth minerals. Securing rare earth minerals from the nation would likely require investment in rail, among other infrastructural areas.
There are political hurdles as well. Germany has criticized Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's plan to hold onto his job as leader of central Asia's largest economy for life, according to a Reuters report.
Kazakhstan is not the only potential partnership. German government sources said there's been a number of officials visiting Mongolia.
